Today the AIP #WednesdayWisdom series provides the baptism record of Alice Irine Gordon (1893). Alice is the fourth child of Samuel Carey Gordon and Anne Cecilia Caroline Watts. Following the discoveries of Alice’s siblings, Nina, Minnie and Robert, this post focuses on the baptism of Alice, providing further context and history of the Smith family connections to the Hassett’s and Wharton’s.
Samuel Carey and Anne Cecilia Caroline Gordon were married on 5 August 1881 in St. John’s Church, Calcutta. So far, AIP has discovered that the couple had three children together, Nina, Minnie and Robert. Following additional searching through the various available resources, a fourth child was discovered: the baptism of Alice Irine Gordon.
Alice was born on 21 June 1893:
Her baptism record further revealed:
- Birth date: 21 June 1893
- Baptism date: 9 July 1893
- Baptism location: Agra
- Name: Alice Irine Gordon
- Parents: Samuel Carey Gordon and Anne Cecilia Caroline Gordon

Alice’s baptism record revealed that she was born on 21 June 1893 and baptised one month later on 9 July 1893 Agra, Bengal Presidency, India. The ceremony was performed by F. Benedict. Her parents, confirmed as Samuel Carey Gordon and Anne Cecilia Caroline Gordon, resided in Agra (Bengal Presidency), with Samuel’s profession stated as School Master. This matches the previous records discovered about Samuel including the baptism records of Nina Eleanor Watts Gordon (1882) and Minnie Eliza Watts Gordon (1884). Interesting to note here that the parents’ abode is stated as Agra. This may mean the family moved locations since the birth of their previous child, Robert Augustus Carey Gordon, but as it’s in the same presidency (Bengal), it may be that the location has been recorded differently. One to ponder, for now.
Nina Eleanor Watts Gordon: 10 January 1882
Minnie Eliza Watts Gordon: 2 April 1884
Robert Augustus Carey Gordon: 11 July 1889
Alice Irine Gordon: 21 June 1893
