Miss Violet Stoneham (Jennifer Kendal – BAFTA Award-nominated for her role) is an English spinster living out her twilight years in genteel poverty in a shabby part of Calcutta, sustained by her memories, her love of music and Shakespeare, and the company of her cat, Sir Toby. Then Samaresh and Nandita come into her life. This vibrant young couple provide the company, excitement and humour that Violet so desperately lacks. But, behind their smiles and treats and gentle teasing, what is the true motivation of their friendship?
