Searching the records of the Pereira’s has so far revealed that John and Mary Anne Pereira had four children born between June 1870 and May 1884 – two boys, two girls. John Pereira had previously had a daughter, named Martha, to his (apparent) first wife Regina Pereira.
John and Mary’s first child (and first daughter) was Victoria Alice Pereira, born on 18th June 1870:
Her baptism record revealed:
- Birth date: 18th June 1870
- Baptism date: 5th November 1870
- Baptism location: Christ Church, Byculla
- Name: Victoria Alice Pereira
- Parents: John and Mary Ann Pereira
- Parents abode: Bombay
- Fathers occupation: Clerk
- Priest performing ceremony: Ledgard, Ges. Missionary S.O.G.
Confirming Victoria’s birth date as 18th June 1870 and her parents as John and Mary Ann Pereira. Her baptism took place at Christ Church in Byculla, Bombay – the same church as many of the extended family. The baptism record confirms Victoria’s parents abode (in 1870) as Bombay, and her father, John’s, occupation as Clerk.
In addition to the baptism record, the burial record of Victoria was located. This confirmed that Victoria died, aged 1 year 26 days, on 14th July 1871:
Hilda’s burial record reveals:
- Burial location: Sewri cemetery
- Death date: 14 July 1871
- Age: 1 years 26 days
- Profession: Daughter of John Pereira. Clerk.
- Burial date: 14 July 1871
- Cause of death: Dysentry
Another sad case of a child death. The cause of death, dysentery, is an infection of the intestines that causes diarrhoea containing blood or mucus. The same cause of death as suffered by Leonard Hassett, aged 1 year, in 1896. The burial location, Sewri cemetery, is a common burial place among ancestors discovered so far. The record further confirms Victoria’s father as John Pereira.
