John Pereira has been one of the most intriguing finds of the Anglo-Indian Project so far. His baptism record continues to prove elusive. Likewise, Mary Anne Lee’s baptism record has been difficult to locate. Their marriage certificate, however, was found:
This revealed:
- Marriage date: 13 January 1868
- Ages: John: 28, Mary-Ann: 16
- Condition: John: widower, Mary-Ann: spinster
- Profession: Assistant Judicial Department Secretariat
- Residence: Bombay
- Father’s names: John Pereira and John Lee
- Banns or licence: Banns (public announcement in a Christian parish church of an impending marriage)
This record has been covered previously. It is worth repeating again to provide context for their children’s baptism records that have since been found and will be posted in the near future. This was John Pereira’s second marriage; his first being to Regina Pereira. John and Regina had (at least) one child, Martha Pereira.
This particular record is significant, as it highlights the names of John and Mary-Anne’s fathers, John Pereira and John Lee, respectively. The two John’s were the first findings from generation 7 and possible links to generation 8.
We already know John and Mary-Anne had a daughter, Sophia Charlotte Pereira. Sophia is their third child of those found so far and I suspect there are more.
*You will notice Mary Ann spelled Mary Ann and Mary Anne. This is spelled as it appears in the records. It is common for names to be misspelled in the British India Baptism, Marriage and Burial records.
