Sophia Charlotte Pereira has appeared many times in the Anglo-Indian Project so far. Her name first appeared in records found in early 2015, then again in the intitial interesting tales of Edith Aileen Wharton (Sophia’s daughter) and John Pereira (Sophia’s father). She was also one of the central characters in the connection between the Hassett and Wharton families.

The marriage of Sophia to William Bernard Wharton has been covered previously, which provided  additional details of Sophia’s life. Some of those are repeated here as a refresher and to set the context for future posts of Sophia and William’s children.

Baptism

Sophia Charlotte Pereira was born 29 September 1881, to parents John and Mary Anne Pereira. Baptised in Girgaum, Bombay.

Marriage

On 24 April 1901, aged 19 years Sophia married a mechanic, William Bernard Wharton (aged 24). The marriage took place in Christ Church, Byculla, Bombay.

Burial

Seven years after her marriage to William, Sophia died of Malaria and Exhaustion on 9 November 1908. Sophia was 27 years old at the time of her death, which was relatively young compared to global trends in 1908 (life expectancy averaging 30-35 years of age). Sophia was buried at Sewri cemetery, Parel, Bombay.

Sophia has been a key character in the Anglo-Indian Project story so far. Future posts will document the children of William and Sophia and begin to explore the extended family of the Pereira and Wharton families.
