Tracing the Hassett line so far has reached seven generations to [first name unknown] Hassett who would have been born in the early part of the 19th century and was father of William Hassett (The search continues for generation eight). William married Isabella De Silva on 8 November 1854. William and Isabella had a son, James, born on 4 July 1863 (one of the first records found by the Anglo-Indian Project).
William and Isabella’s first son, William, was born in 1855:

His baptism record reveals:
- Baptism place: Christ Church, Byculla
- Baptism date: 19 October 1855
- Birth date: 23 September 1855
- Parents names: William and Isabella Hassett
- Abode of parents: Bombay
- Profession of father: Overseer of the Jail Treadmill
Confirming William’s birth date as 23 September 1855 and his parents as William and Isabella Hassett. His baptism took place at Christ Church in Byculla, Bombay – the same church as many of his future family. The baptism record confirms William’s parents abode (in 1855) as Bombay, and his father, William’s, occupation as Overseer of the Jail Treadmill – basically ‘jail treadmills’ were usually used as punishment of prisoners and rotated around a horizontal axis, requiring the user to step upwards, like walking up an endless staircase.
William died on 21 May 1867:

This stated:
- Burial place: Poona
- William died: 21 May 1867
- Cause of death: Congestion of the Brain and Fevers
- Age: 11 years old
- Profession (father): William Hassett, Guard G.L.O. Railway
- Burial date: 22 May 1867
Another young death – the cause congestion of the brain and fevers. His brother James Hassett, would have been almost 4 years old at this time. It is further interesting to note the change in profession of his father, William Hassett (senior) from Overseer of the Jail Treadmill to Guard G.L.O. Railway – more on this later.
William and Isabella Hassett’s children so far, with birth date:
William Hassett: 23 September 1855
James Hassett: 4 July 1863

Very interesting read Dan and sad to see some of the issues families had to deal with at the time.
