Hilda Mildred Hassett, born on Christmas Eve 1885, provided an interesting piece to the Hassett-Wharton story. After being thrown off-track by a typographical error on the original record for Hilda Hassett which read Hanett, it transpired, Hilda was the daughter of James and Martha Hassett and married to William Bernard Wharton (on 24 April 1912).
In a similar fashion to other findings so far, the story of William and Hilda is short; Hilda died on 31 March 1913, less than a year after her marriage to William Wharton.
The connections between the Hassett and Wharton families are fascinating. Hilda was the sister of David Vincent Hassett who was the husband of Edith Aileen Wharton who was the daughter of William Bernard Wharton (Hilda’s husband). As with the story of John Pereira (the beginning of the Hassett-Wharton connections), Hilda became a key piece of the Anglo-Indian Project jigsaw.
