This post is part of the Anglo-Indian Project Holiday Season series 2017
John Pereira, born in (est.) 1840, is another fascinating discovery in the Anglo-Indian Project. John married Regina Pereira and had a daughter, Martha. Following Regina’s death in 1865, John married Mary Ann Lee in 1868, and had a daughter Sophia. This marriage appears to have joined the Hassett and Wharton families in a way John Pereira probably never envisioned in 1868. The subsequent events are still the cause of intrigue nearly 150 years later.
John’s daughter Martha married James Hassett and had a son, David Vincent Hassett.
John’s daughter from his second marriage, Sophia Charlotte Pereira, married William Bernard Wharton and had a daughter, Edith Aileen Wharton.
David and Edith, half cousins (Grandchildren of John Pereira), were married in 1922 and had a daughter, Elaine Cynthia Hassett.
The curious case of John Pereira remains one of the most intriguing stories so far.
