Today the AIP #WednesdayWisdom series provides another newly discovered official record. The last few posts have focused on the context and history of the Smith family connections to the Hassett’s and Wharton’s, in particular the children of Samuel Carey Gordon and Anne Cecilia Caroline Watts. So far two children, Nina and Minnie, have been discovered. Today’s post focuses on the third child of Samuel and Anne, Robert Augustus Carey Gordon. His baptism record is presented here.

After the discoveries of Nina Eleanor Watts Gordon and Minnie Eliza Watts Gordon further searching through the various available resources led to the discovery of Robert’s baptism record.
Robert was born on 11 July 1889:

- Baptism date: 20 August 1889
- Baptism location: St Thomas (Free School) Church, Calcutta, India
- Name: Robert Augustus Carey Gordon
- Parents: Samuel Carey Gordon and Anne Cecilia Caroline Gordon
- Parents abode: Calcutta
- Fathers occupation: Professor of Music
- Priest performing ceremony: S.B. Taylor, Chaplain
Robert’s baptism record revealed that he was born on 11 July 1889 and baptised one month later on 20 August 1889 at St Thomas (Free School) Church, Calcutta, India. The ceremony was performed by S.B. Taylor (this matches the baptism record of his sister, Minnie Eliza Watts Gordon (1884). Robert’s parents, confirmed as Samuel Carey Gordon and Anne Cecilia Caroline Gordon, resided in Calcutta (Bengal Presidency), with Samuel’s profession stated as Professor of Music. This differs from the previous records of Robert’s siblings Nina and Minnie, which stated their father’s profession as ‘School Master’. Nonetheless, presumably Samuel Carey Gordon was a music teacher (‘school master’ typically means ‘male school teacher’).
Of the children discovered so far, Robert is the first born son of Samuel and Anne. More to follow.
